The idea of Death is just so completely out of any realm of understanding.
It is an unavoidable aspect of life.
Someone may be there one day, and the next their souls gone forever.
We all realize death eventually will come to us all, some before our due time, but although we know it is coming it always seems to catch us by surprise. And dealing with death sure as hell never gets easier.
Having compassion for animals is fulfilling an obligation as a human being. As human beings we like to think as ourselves as functioning on higher level of intelligence and coniousness. With this intelligence comes a moral responsibility to show compassion for all other living creatures with no exception made for any species.
